MANILA, Philippines — Police arrested a man authorities claim is a ranking New People’s Army officer in the Bicol region.
However, the man authorities identified as Teodoro Espedido, alias “Meroy,” secretary of the rebel Komiteng Probinsya in Sorsogon, told the arresting officers his name was Edilberto Erena of Sampaloc town and was not the person they were looking for.
Nevertheless, the police took him in after a rebel returnee said Erenea and Espedido are one and the same person.
The suspect was arrested by police intelligence agents from Laguna and Sorsogon in Sta. Rosa Homes Subdivision, Barangay Dita, Sta. Rosa, Laguna around 3:30 p.m., Calabarzon region police director Chief Superintendent Benito Estipona said.
Estipona said the suspect, who was facing standing warrants of arrest for murder, multiple murder, robbery in band and rebellion, had been in hiding in Laguna since 2005.
Among others, he was allegedly involved in the raid on the Gubat patrol base on February 14, 2003 in which three policemen were killed.
The suspect is detained at the Sta. Rosa police.
Meanwhile, Army troops in Samar recovered two landmines and other explosive devices at an abandoned NPA camp in Barangay Happy Valley, San Isidro, Northern Samar on Monday, belated reports said.
Nine abandoned NPA camps have been discovered by the military in Samar and Leyte since January.
