Anakbayan Condemns Illegal, Violent Arrest of Members Opposing Demolition in Le Jardin
DAVAO CITY – Anakbayan strongly condemns the violent and illegal arrest and detention made by officers under the Talomo Police District against its members Friday (August 25) while trying to stop the demolition of houses at the disputed Le Jardin (also known as Bariquit Compound), Bugac, Maa.
Around 8:00 in the morning yesterday when about 20 members of the Davao City Talomo Police under Superintendent Dionisio C. Abude came to the area fully armed, in order to implement the Villa Abrille’s fence permit.
Residents and members of progressive groups resisted the attempted destruction of the passage used to get in and out of the compound. During the commotion, Toto Bolcan, Davao City spokesperson of KADAMAY and three youth were ceased by the police. The youth were punched and electrocuted before loading them into the police mobile. Bolcan was released at the police station for lack of evidence.
Members of progressive youth organizations were detained at the Talomo Police Station before transferred to Davao City Police Station. The four were Joselito Lagon, Jr., regional spokesperson of Kabataang Artista para sa Tunay na Kalayaan (KARATULA); Wyrlo Enero, a member of the League of Filipino Students (LFS); Johnny Boy Urbina and John Michale Lim, both members of Anakbayan. Lagon, Urbina and Lim were ceased at the site while Enero was arrested at the police station.
“We are outraged by the demonstration of fascism by the Talomo Police who arrested, beat up and electrocuted our youth leaders including the members of LFS and KARATULA,” said Cherry Orendain, regional spokesperson of Anakbayan.
The police have pressed charges against the youth. Lagon, Urbina and Lim are charged with direct assault and disobedience, resistance to an agent of person in authority. Lim is also charged with physical injuries while Enero is charged with destruction of government property and resisting arrest of person in authority.
While detained, the youth were beaten by members of the Talomo District Police.
As of yesterday, there were already forty members of the police at the compound. According to Orendain, the police attempted to arrest Urbina and Benjie Badal Spokesperson of Anakbayan-Davao City, yesterday but the two were retrieved.
Rodolfo Silawan, student and also a member of Anakbayan, was punched by an unidentified state element while leaving the Bariquit Compound yesterday.
“Since 2011, the Villa Abrilles attempted to get rid of the residents of the compound in order to develop the area into a subdivision, claiming that it was legally theirs,” Orendain said.
Residents continually experienced harassment during the dispute. Barricades were repeatedly destroyed, crops were covered by soil with a bulldozer, also disconnecting the electricity line in the process. Water was also disconnected by order of the claimants since last year.
“But the fight of the Bariquit residents is a legitimate fight for the people’s right to land,” Orendain said.
According to statistics, 228, 142 families of informal settlers out of 556, 526 occupy government-owned lands. While only 190, 376 families occupy private lands. ”
Unfortunately, the Aquino government has been aggressive in pursuing Public-Private Partnership and also aggressive in demolishing urban poor residents in favor of the expansion of private companies,” Orendain said.
Anakbayan will hold a series of vigil and protest actions calling for the release of the four.###
Ang lupa ngayon ay claimed by the Villa Abrilles of Davao.
Neighbors in Morningside Heights by Dominador I. Ilio
Before the survey men came to these parts
With painted poles and shiny instruments
(That saw through thick talahib and bamboo thickets),
The children used to swim in the pond
That was the abandoned quarry at the foot
Of the low hill (from old times called Kulilat)
Where the shortcut to town led through.
(In summer the children climbed the dwarf sineguelas
That sheltered the goats from the heat.)
Lately they built a tall concrete house
Hard by the quarry, and enclosed a hectare of ground
with a high adobe wall. So now we get to town
By a long, long.way. And the goats
And carabaos have to canter to the distant creek
For their water and wallow. Many other
Beautiful houses are being built in the new
Subdivision. In town, they no longer call us
The people from old Kulilat.
But from Morningside Heights.
We really don’t know our new Neighbors.
They don’t walk to church or to market with the others.
They have cars. On holidays many many cars
Come to their place and we could hear
The bathers in the pool.
The children now go to the new roads to play.
But in the evenings they enjoy immensely
Playing with a three-colored cat that comes
To the back porch.
But it won’t be for long now though.
For the wire screens atop the adobe wall
Grow very fast.
A simple, but stark, commentary on what happens in a suburban area when a subdivision is opened for affluent people to build their mansions complete with urban amenities. The long-time residents suffer physical as well as emotional dislocations~– including the visits in the back porch of some alien cats!
