MANILA (UPDATE) – The Samahan ng Ex-detainees Laban sa Detensyon at Aresto (Selda) started today its week-long fasting in preparation for Pres. Aquino’s State of the Nation Address (SONA) on July 23.
The group picketed at the Department of Justice (DOJ) to dramatize their call for the immediate release of some 385 political prisoners nationwide. Of this number, 13 are elderly, 48 disease-stricken, and 20 still detained in spite of the lapse of their detention period, Selda claimed.
“Political prisoners in different detention centers today started their week-long fasting until PNoy’s SONA… this government has continuously focused on prosecuting activists and their sympathizers because of their political beliefs,” Selda secretary-general Angie Ipong said.
Ipong said detainees from Southern Mindanao Region, Compostela Valley, Central Visayas, Eastern Visayas, Batangas Provincial Jail, Isabela Provincial Jail, New Bilibid Prisons in Muntinlupa City, Camp Bagong Diwa in Taguig City, and Camp Crame in Quezon City also took part in the fasting.
