Ericson Acosta is a poet and songwriter arrested without warrant in a militarized barrio in February 2011 while conducting human rights and environmental research for a local peasant group.
Acosta was named finalist of the 2011 Imprisoned Artist Prize at the Freedom to Create Awards festival in Cape Town, South Africa last November. Artists, cultural workers and human rights advocates including the Amnesty International, the Concerned Artists of the Philippines, the state-run National Commission for Culture and the Arts, the Philippine Center of the International PEN (Poets, Playwrights, Essayists, Novelists), among others support the call to free Ericson Acosta. His Petition for Review of the fabricated illegal possesion of explosive complaint against him is still pending before the Philippines’ Department of Justice.
