On Sunday, Ericson Acosta — cultural worker, poet, songwriter, thespian and activist — turned 40. It also marked a year and three months since he was detained following his arrest by soldiers who came upon him doing research work in an upland village in Samar.
Authorities have tagged him a ranking communist rebel officer.
But Acosta’s fellow artists, activists, friends and supporters say he is no such thing.
Which is why on Sunday they gathered at the UP Balay Kalinaw for a “Lugawan ng Bayan,” serving up rice gruel both to mark his birthday and to demand he be freed from what they say is his illegal detention on trumped up charges.
